It’s Never Too Late to Learn Guitar - Pat Has Helped Thousands Do It
Pat Thomas fell in love with the guitar at just six years old when his father taught him his first G chord.
His dad only knew four chords – but that was all it took.
From Kentucky to New York City - And the Heart of Folk Music
Growing up, Pat would sit in the car with his father on Saturday nights, listening to the Grand Ole Opry on WSM Nashville, because the signal wouldn’t reach inside the house. It was there he first heard legends like Hank Williams, Mother Maybelle Carter, Roy Acuff, and Johnny Cash.
Those moments lit a spark that never went out. Then in 1964, everything changed.
Watching The Beatles on television for the first time, Pat was captivated by the energy, the sound, and the guitars. From that point on, he knew — this was what he wanted to do.
After high school in the early 1970s, Pat set out to take his guitar playing to the next level.
He moved to New York City and studied at the Guitar Study Center in Midtown Manhattan, owned by Eddie Simon, brother of Paul Simon.
Living in Greenwich Village, Pat immersed himself in one of the most influential music scenes in the world. He performed in legendary folk clubs like Folk City, The Back Fence, and The Village Vanguard – some of the same stages that helped launch artists like Bob Dylan.
That experience didn’t just improve his playing – it shaped him as a musician and as a person.
From First Band to Sharing the Stage with Legends
After returning to Kentucky, Pat formed The Pat Thomas Band and began performing professionally.
Over the years, he toured and performed across the country, opening for artists like George Strait, Hank Williams Jr., Ricky Skaggs, John Prine and Fingers Taylor (Jimmy Buffett’s Harmonica player).
But as meaningful as those experiences were, Pat discovered something even more rewarding:
A Teacher Who Understands Adults
After years on the road, Pat shifted his focus to education.
He earned a degree in Human Training and Development, specializing in andragogy — the science of how adults learn.
He continued expanding his musical knowledge through:
- Jazz guitar studies at the University of Louisville
- Training with Bill Kossler, co-founder of the Suzuki Classical Guitar Program
- Certification in the Suzuki Method developed by Dr. Shinichi Suzuki
This combination of real-world experience and formal education gave Pat something rare:
The ability to truly understand how to teach adults effectively.
Founder of a Thriving Music School
Pat and his wife Julie co-founded the Kentucky Arts Academy, where he served as Director.
Under his leadership:
🎸 350+ students attended weekly lessons
👨🏫 25 instructors taught both in-person and online
🎯 Thousands of students learned music over the years
But through all of that, one insight stood out:
Adults need a different approach than kids.
